About us
 
As a world leader within solid wood bending  we develop and market machines and complete plants for precompressing hardwood for easy and cold bending. The first plant was installed in 1991 and today companies in Europe, in North America and in Asia are successfully using our technology to position themselves in their own market.

The patented process was developed at the Danish Technological Institute 10 years ago and involves heating and softening of hardwood cants of moisture contents of 20-25%, followed by a longitudinally compression in a special horizontal hydraulic press for folding of the cell walls of the hardwood. This structural change makes the following bending much more easy even in cold condition. Furthermore, the finished products or components may be bent in more than one plane and in small radii of curve.

1998, Compwood Machines Ltd. introduced an industrial series of cost effective compression plants. 1999, the new generation of flexible edge banding material of solid wood was introduced at Interzum and at Ligna in May.

2000, the company was taken over by the management.
2001, the company moved to new facilities in Slagelse and in Jaegerspris, West and North of Copenhagen. The Compwood Partner Plan was introduced at Ligna 2001.

Compwood and the Wood Working Industry
 
Two main types of bendable hardwoods can be produced using our technology: the wet, bendable precompressed hardwood and the dried, bendable precompressed hardwood.
 
The wet, bendable "Compwood" can be bent when the moisture contents is over 20%. The "Compwood" is fixed in a jig, dried in a HF drier or in a kiln and becomes stable when dried. Typical applications are furniture components, handrails and window and door frames. 
Working with wet bendable "Compwood" in the workshop: 
 
   

1. producing jig(s) of plywood (handmade or by CNC) 2. clamping the wet "Compwood" on the jig 3. cold bending (manually or by hydraulic press in case of many items in one bending) 4. kiln drying for a few hours and reuse of jig(s), then further drying of bent part in light fixture as illustrated below:

Dried, bendable Compwood is highly precompressed hardwood dried as straight planks and cut to dimension. This material stays forever flexible. Applications are flexible edgebanding material and pliable mouldings or trims. Pliable veneer is sliced in cold condition from wet planks of highly precompressed hardwoods.
 


Compwood and the Furniture Industry
 
Dirk-Uwe Klaas, Chief Executive VDM, National Confederation of German furniture industries said in a recent interview (4.12.99 World Furniture International Markets Review):
"Supplying cheaper and cheaper furniture is not the solution. Large-scale production and knock-down furniture cannot satisfy the demand for customization and individual living space.
 
In order to revitalize consumers purchasing attitudes we have to supply quality, that is to say value added products focusing on brand new ideas, fantasy and sparkling creativity.
The furniture industry and retailing have to work together aiming to reach their common goal".

The Compwood technology for easy bending of hardwood is one of the means to accomplish this goal - illustrated by the below examples applied in the furniture industry of today - from the classic design of professor Poul Kjaerholm, Denmark (1980) to the daring design of Studio Dillon, London (1998). The properties and  main advantages of precompressed hardwood are listed below:

Precompressed hardwood possess specific properties:

 

·          It can be bent in several planes in small radii of curve.

 

·          It can be stored for a long time and be bent in cold condition and in thick dimensions.

 

·          It is harder and more resistant to impact than ordinary wood.

 

·          It is more flexible, however, stable when dry.

 

·          It is sliceable and flexible in thinner dimensions when highly compressed.

 

·          It can be machined, sanded, sawn, when still moist and bendable.

 

·          It can be routed along the grain direction when dried.

 

Production related advantages:

 

·          Thick pieces and hard-to-bend wood species can be bent with less wastage in short time and with a large capacity.

 

·          Up to 50% higher yield could be gained compared to traditional techniques of shaping wood in difficult bendings.

 

·          Pre-bending is rendered superfluous.

 

·          Less dryings cracks and smaller costs for finishing.

 

·          No end-grain moisture problems (compared to carved pieces).

 

·          Less tearing when moulding (compared to steam bending) as less wringled inside the curved parts.

 

·          No colour differences and fine lines (compared to laminated parts or finger joint curved parts).

 

·          Stronger than fingerjointed and curved parts as curving follows the direction of the grains.

 

·          Can be cut into thick veneer without cracking for parquet flooring and thereby less wastage is produced.

 

·          Possibility for storage of precompressed planks for up to 6 months for "just in time" production and for small production runs.

·          Opens an easy access to curving solid wood as an alternative to a highly specialized techniques like steam bending.
